It’s extremely irresponsible to advise building a retaining wall or ring around an existing tree. This WILL eventually kill the tree. You CANNOT pile up soil or mulch around the trunk of a tree that’s higher than the original level of soil. The tree will choke. The ONLY time this should be done is when putting in a new tree which can be planted at the higher soil level within the ring.
I just placed a rock border around my tree aproximately 2ft around the trunk. I didn’t fill in with any soil but planted a stonecrop/spreading plant around the base of the tree. I do not want to kill my tree so will this be ok?
What can you do in order to dress it up? I have ivy growing all over and I want to tear it out and put a small wall using river rocks around the tree. There are plenty of tree limbs that are above the ground. I wanted to put some soil and some planting. This tree is about 40 years old. Any advice? Thanks
Thank you so much for your post. I just bought my first house and I was all ready to laiden the base of my big pine trees with topsoil and impatiens. Seriously.
You saved a tree or three+

Omg! I just put a stone border around tree in April and the tree looks dead. No leaves this summer. But it didn’t have leaves in April either so maybe the tree was already sick or dead. No reason to think the stone border would kill the treee. No one else in the neighborhood has a dead tree but have same design
DON’T DON’T DON’T do this with an established tree!! Do not build up soil over the tree’s “root flare” (where the bottom of the tree meets the ground and starts to “flare” out). We just lost a giant old oak tree in our yard because the previous owners “landscaped” around the tree 25 years ago. We were unaware that this slowly kills the tree.
Beautiful designs If your worried about tree put in a bird house or feeder on a pole and design away! Thank you for the beautiful ideas ?
Dirt or mulch up against tree will trap moisture and cause tree to rot, eventually. You can plant a bed around the tree, just make sure the soil on inside ring of bed is pushed away from tree (think of a trench around parameter of tree, separating it from the bed). Same with mulch.
Have mulched around a cherry tree for several years now. Should I remove the mulch at this time (25 years)? Don’t want to lose my tree at this time. Did notice one limb died over the winter.
